Here Are All The 2017 Races & Ballot Measures You Need To Know About

$

With all eyes on the 2018 midterm elections, it's easy to forget that people are going to the polls on November 7. Yes, Election Day 2017 is just around the corner, and it's crucial you go out and vote. (You can check whether there's a race in your area here.)

Of course, this election seems to be a sleepy one since it's an off year: Only two states will be choosing a governor and there are fewer ballot measures than in previous off-year elections. But Tuesday could mark bunch of historic firsts — such as the first transgender state legislator in Virginia and the first female Seattle mayor in more than 90 years.

Plus, after the 2016 presidential election, people seem to be more in tune with the importance of going to the polls. If we're lucky, Tuesday will offer a preview of the voter turnout and excitement that we can expect in the 2018 midterm elections.

Ahead, take a look at the races and ballot measures you should be paying attention to on Election Day.

Virginia: The governor race in Virginia is typically seen as a referendum on whoever is sitting in the Oval Office, as it takes place one year after the presidential election. In this case, the race is seen as a test for President Trump.  In theory, Democrat Ralph Northam should be able to win. After all, Hillary Clinton won the state in the 2016 election and the sitting governor, Terry McAuliffe, is a Democrat. But the polls show the race between Northam and Republican candidate Ed Gillespie is quite close.

New Jersey: Neither candidate in the governor race is a centrist: Democrat Phil Murphy has called for progressive policies, such as raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour and legalizing recreational marijuana, while Republican Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno has steered clear of the traditional GOP campaign focused on cutting property taxes and gone after the undocumented community. Their stances, and who ends up winning, could be a preview of what's to come in the 2018 midterms.

Seattle, WA: The city will elect the first female mayor in 91 years — now the question is which candidate will come out on top. In August, Jenny Durkan and Cary Moon obtained the most votes among 21 candidates in the nonpartisan mayoral race.

Charlotte, NC: If she wins, Democrat Vi Lyles would make history as the first Black female mayor in the city of Charlotte. And if her opponent, Republican Kenny Smith, ends up victorious, he would be the first GOP mayor in the city since former mayor Pat McCrory left office in 2009.

Virginia House of Delegates: In Virginia, 43 Democratic women are vying for a seat in the House of Delegates — a record number. (Nine female Republican candidates and one independent are also running.)

Some interesting races are that of Democrat Danica Roem in the 13th District, who could become the first transgender state legislator in the state and possibly the first elected in the country; the 12th-District race in which Chris Hurst, the former news anchor whose partner reporter Alison Parker was fatally shot on live TV two years ago, is running as a Democrat; and in the 31st District, Elizabeth Guzmán could become the first Latina and first-generation immigrant to serve in the House.

Washington State Senate:The 45th-District race not only features two women of color with immigrant roots — Republican Jinyoung Lee Englund and Democrat Manka Dhingra — but could fundamentally change the political landscape in the state of Washington. Thanks to a coalition, the GOP currently has a one-vote majority in the state Senate. Meanwhile, Democrats have control of the state House and governor’s office. If Dhingra wins, that would turn the state Senate blue — and Republicans would lose the leverage they currently have to block key parts of the Democratic agenda.

New York: Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr., an incumbent, is running unopposed. But two bombshell reports in recent weeks have cast a shadow on what was supposed to be a guaranteed third term in office. Despite allegedly having the necessary evidence, he failed to prosecute Harvey Weinstein and President Trump's children Ivanka and Donald Jr. — and the most damning fact for some voters is that Weinstein's and the Trumps' respective lawyers happened to make contributions to Vance's campaigns. Now, Peter Gleason, a longtime critic of the DA who obtained 35,000 votes in the last election, joined the race last-minute as a write-in candidate.

Maine: Voters will decide whether Maine should be the 33rd place in the country to expand Medicaid. It's the first time that the fate of the expansion in a state is left up to voters.

Athens, OH: An ordinance to decriminalize marijuana in certain cases will be on the ballot in the city of Athens. If it passes, the measure would eliminate fines and court costs for all marijuana-related offenses at the misdemeanor level. Felony-level offenses would still carry the same penalties and wouldn't be affected by the ordinance.

Sarah Hyland Shuts Down Plastic Surgery Rumors — "It's Degrading"

$

Sarah Hyland's face and body are not up for debate — but that hasn't stopped the trolls who keep scrutinizing the star for her weight, her absence at awards shows, and now, her swollen lips. Like every time before, the Modern Family star is not staying silent. Her most recent response is targeted at Life & Style magazine — which published a lengthy (and since-edited) piece on her evolving appearance, including insight from doctors and plastic surgeons — none of which treat Hyland, of course.

The publication claimed Hyland recently opted for lip injections, supposedly solving the "mystery" of her mouth's plumper appearance. According to Hyland, this is not only untrue, but also "ridiculous and degrading." Naturally, she took to Twitter to set the record straight, and also raise a point about the way we critique women's appearances.

Hyland explained that her medical complications this year — including her fight with kidney dysplasia, her recent kidney transplant, and the side effects of her medication — have all impacted her physical appearance. (Including steroids, which can cause puffiness.)

In the first note, she wrote, "I have had the worst medical year of my life and to create an entire article surrounding the question of if I’ve had plastic surgery is the MOST insulting thing. Adding insult to injury. You have NO IDEA what I have been through. And I have somewhat addressed these rumors already. People like you are the reason why young girls feel the need to alter their face. MY face has been altered by LIFE SAVING medication. Take your ‘journalism’ and use it for some good. FOR ONCE."

Closing the conversation — hopefully once and for all — Hyland ended on a higher note, "I would like to go on the record saying I do not have lip injections. Not that it’s anyone’s business but I’m on a cocktail of different steroids and it has made my lips swell. This has happened to me before when I was in the hospital. Something that’s out of my control. But silver lining? My lips looks done with no needles. Y’all are just jealous."

Hyland is right — and her point stands for those who choose to get plastic surgery, too. It's nobody's business but your own what you choose to do with your face. And the cycle of shame and criticism regarding women's appearances needs to end.

I Make $500,000 A Year — & This Is How My Salary Affected My Life

$

Sometimes, we run across a Money Diary that is just too good to be true. And sometimes, we reach out to interview the author to find out a little bit more beyond their day-to-day. In Ballers, we're interviewing women who have larger-than-life salaries — about their lives, careers, and relationships. Here, we chat with a 34-year-old executive director, one-half of a couple earning $1.25 million a year.

Let's start at the beginning. What was your first salary out of college?

"My starting salary was $60,000 a year — I went to a well-known college in Los Angeles, and I was a business major. I came out working at a classic summer internship that turned into a full-time offer from my first employer."

Were you always in finance?

"Yeah, I was. My parents always said if they were going to help pay for my education I had two options: business or law, so I didn’t have a lot of flexibility. And the deal with my parents was that they would pay for three years, and I pay would for one. They wanted me to have a stake in my education."

How did you pay for the third year?

"My school had a fairly decent grant program, and then I took a few student loans out. Back then loans were a lot cheaper than they were now. Someone commented [on the diary]: Why do we have student loan debt? The answer is that my husband has a bunch of student debt, and since it has lower interest rates than anything else we have, it was better to keep it instead of paying it all off and not having money for our house."

Would you have gone into business if you didn't have to?

"I probably would have still done business. My parents owned their own business, and it can be great, but they also worked harder than anyone else I’ve seen my entire life. I saw that they had a lot of ups and downs running their own business, and I wanted to have financial security. So I went into corporate finance. I wanted to be self-sufficient, and I wanted to be able to do what I wanted to do without anyone questioning how. So that’s how I chose my major — I wanted to make a lot of money so I could enjoy my life on my own terms."

I feel like a lot of teenagers don’t think like that.

"Yeah, I’m a rare breed. But my mom worked for my dad, so she was dependent on him, and I realized for my mom, it was very restrictive. She would complain about having to ask for money or explain what she wanted to do. I always hated that, so I decided that I would always be able to take care of myself. I guess that was the more rudimentary thought that formed my ideas."

Was there a specific point in your career when you really jumped salaries?

"When I switched to my last company, I basically got a 100% raise. I was making $150,000 — and that was a $100,000 base salary, $30,000 bonus annually, and I was getting some revenue share, a percentage, as part of my pay. When I moved to the new company, my base salary moved to $150,000. And then they gave me a $50,000 signing bonus to make up for the fact that I wasn’t getting the bonus from my company because I was leaving before the year was up, and my bonus target was 75 to 100%. I hit the 100% my first year out.

"That was like an 'Oh my god' raise. It was a function of two things. One, I was really underpaid at my previous job. And two, I filled a very specific need for my new employer, so they were willing to pay to get me. That was a game-changer. Their offer was completely eye-opening, like, 'Oh my gosh, I make more money than my parents ever did, than most of my friends' parents ever made. This is a whole different ball game.' I never even considered it. It still floors me a little bit now. Like, how long am I going to get away with this?"

How did you realize you were being underpaid?

"The year I decided I was going to leave my first company, I had an amazing year, a record kind of year, especially given how junior I was at the company at the time. Not only did I have a great year, I also worked 100 hours a week for six months. It was insane. So I thought I was entitled to not only a promotion, but a pay raise as well. I’ll say I probably did myself a disservice that I didn’t tell my boss my expectations. But in the end, he gave me a 20% increase on my bonus from the prior year, which in dollars was $5,000. I was like, Are you fucking kidding me? I made you a lot of money, and I worked tirelessly, and I outperformed everyone here, and the best you could do was $5,000? And try to sell it to me that I should be happy with that? I got really disgruntled and decided to leave the company for it.

"It wasn’t just me, though — it was the entire team that was being underpaid. So when I was interviewing for the new job, they didn't know what I was making, and their first offer to me came with that pay package. That was their assessment of what I was worth. So that became my new baseline. I didn’t negotiate it, and I regret that. I was so dumbstruck that I just took it."

Have you noticed any change in behavior from other people as you made more money?

"Well, it’s like, some of the comments in the Money Diaries. People hear about that kind of money, and some people get really offended by it. You also get people who think, Oh, you have a lot of money therefore you should give me x. You get that from family a lot.

"My husband and I both do a lot for our families, especially with our nieces and nephews. Neither of us come from wealthy families, so it’s not without some expectation. We spend a fair amount paying for summer camps or school stuff or things that can ease the burden on my siblings. They do fine, but it’s easier for us to do it. So I do help out a lot. But sometimes that help starts to be expected, and it gets a bit ridiculous. It was like we were a bank for a couple of years, and I was getting taken advantage of, and I felt guilty so I allowed it, but I had to put my foot down. There’s help, and there’s expectation, and I’m here for you guys in an emergency, but I’m not here for you guys as backup for everything you want to do."

Why did you feel guilty?

"Because it’s your family, and you love them. You technically can afford to do it, but you see how, if you keep going down the path you’re going, you could compromise your own financial position by meeting their expectations."

Can you talk about a time when these expectations ruined a relationship?

"One of the more hurtful ones is when someone asks me for a loan, and they can't pay it back. Instead of coming to me to talk about it, they cut off all communication with me. So, not only am I out the money, but I have also lost the relationship because that person feels bad for owning me money. The only way to get them back in my life is to forgive the loan. I have done it several times to avoid losing a person I care about, but I have never been able to reconcile that. I am generally very reasonable about money and can never understand why they won't just come to me."

How have your relationships with your family changed as you've made more money?

"I was very close with my parents and for a long time I would talk to them about what I was making, and how I was doing, and there was one year I got a $100,000 bonus. My mom just couldn’t believe it. It almost seemed, this sounds so crazy, but it seemed like she got a little intimidated by me. She started making comments like, Oh well, you’re rich, so I guess you can just do whatever you want. I don’t know. It sounds bad, but I get it.

"I also have a little sister, and I said something, joking, to her like, 'Oh I hate you, because you could eat cheeseburgers every day and never gain a pound.' And she said, 'Yeah, but you’re rich so…' I was caught off-guard by the comment. I didn't know how to respond to that."

So, have you just stopped talking about money altogether?

"A few years ago, we decided to stop talking about how much money we made — nothing good comes from talking about it. My husband and I talk about it, but that’s it. We don’t talk to our friends about it, either. The only time I’ll talk about it is when I do mentoring for women coming out of college, or when I'm talking to friends who are in big negotiations. I won't talk about how much I make right now because it becomes a distraction for them, but I'll talk about some of the raises over time, or how I’ve gotten some of my compensation."

What's the most annoying response to your high salary?

"People will say, 'Oh you’ve had it so easy, and you make all this money.' That’s the most infuriating to me. I have been so disciplined since middle school about grades and school and work, and I’ve never taken liberty with anything. The work has paid off, but it has been work. And the part that people forget is that not only am I a woman in this heavily male-dominated corporate environment, I’m also a minority. And I was also young. It's already really hard to thrive in this environment, but to do it and be the only one, and be the only one throughout your entire career, is an additional level of stress or emotional exertion that people don’t give a lot of credit for."

Can you talk about a specific moment when you realized you had a little bit more to fight for than someone who wasn’t a woman of color?

"At my last company, there was someone who I had to work with to approve all the deals I was doing. And from the beginning, he was just horrible to me. He would automatically assume that if anything went wrong, it was my fault, and that I had lied about it. So I would avoid talking to him, and eventually managed a team, and I worked my way up for five years.

"One year, me and my counterpart were both up for a promotion — it was a really big deal. Part of that promotion was an internal promotion as well, which gives you more authority to sign off on bigger deals. And this guy who hated me was the guy responsible for giving this promotion. So my boss put both of us up for it, and the guy approved the other man's promotion and denied mine. He wouldn't give me a reason why. He just said, 'I don't think you're ready yet.' But how could I not be ready if I do the same thing this other person does, and we both got promoted, and my boss believes I deserve it? So I went to my boss and said, this isn't right. There's no logical reason why I don't deserve this. The numbers support it, my work supports it. And my boss agreed with me, but he couldn't get a straight answer from the approval guy, either. This went on for almost a year. What I said to my boss was, 'If you don't want to give me a promotion, fine. But at least give me an explanation. And give me steps for how to get to that promotion. What can I do that I haven’t been doing?' And he couldn't give me that.

"I quickly realized it wasn't the work I was doing, and it wasn't whether we got along, because I tried for five years. It was just who I am.

"For me, the denial of the promotion was the culmination of all the hostility this guy had toward me the past five years. The fact that it was allowed to stand was the most frustrating part. I was very fortunate that I had a mentor at the company who wasn’t in my chain of command. I explained what was going on, [saying] I’ve been as diplomatic about it as possible, but frankly this isn’t right, and it has the air of bias. I don’t pull that card often. My mentor went on my behalf to the head of the group and talked to them about the situation, and pretty quickly afterward I got the promotion."

That's so interesting — because it obviously wasn't a money thing. You already got a pay raise and promotion.

"Right. This just gave me more authority to do my job. I think it’s important to realize that there’s overt sexism and overt racism, but most of it is much more subtle. And it does have a real impact on people’s careers. Not giving me this internal promotion says, 'Yeah, we gave her this role that everyone sees in public, but we don’t think she’s responsible enough to have this role internally.' And it would’ve undercut my authority — and I think it did for a really long time when I didn't get it."

Was there a specific point when you realized your spending habits have changed?

"Every bonus season, it changes. [ Laughs] Every year, you know? Think about it. You make more money, you spend more money. We’re young, and again, I think it’s always harder when you don’t have an example from your parents on how to manage this kind of money. We’ve made some mistakes. This year was our biggest pay year, ever, and so much of it shows up in a bonus. So it hits your account all of a sudden and you’re just like, Whoa. I went shopping over the course of a month and I spent probably $8,000 on clothes. I justified it because I needed stuff for my new job, which is a much more formal work environment, but not $8,000 worth. I just went a little buck wild. I’ve since reined it in, but I have some really great shoes to show for it. My husband was like, 'You’ve lost your mind.' I was like, 'Yes, I have, but it’s back now.'

"We’re not perfect when it comes to money. We lease most of our cars. I happen to like nice cars, and I like new cars. We do some things frivolously, and I think we’ve made some mistakes along the way, but I think we are getting more mature and getting better at it and getting more focused and disciplined about it. We didn’t get a roadmap to this, but there were these years of buying our house and remodeling our house, and it was a complete hemorrhaging of money. And then trying to save and having a baby and all these things. So we’ve hired people to help manage our money a little bit better. We set up certain buckets where we don’t touch the money, we’ve invested in some stuff to put our money to work, and we’re doing some things to stem the outflow of money. If we don’t get our hands on it, we won’t spend it. So that’s how we keep ourselves from having a really, really fun time."

Do you see your salary continuing to grow?

"Yes, it’s all going to be promotion-based at this point. I’m an ED, or an executive director, now. The next title is managing director, and that’s a pretty big jump... If all goes well it’s probably three to four years away for me. And beyond that you can start running larger and larger parts of the business, or larger businesses, so I do think there is more mobility. My husband might be close to maxing out on his end, but I suspect I could get to his level."

Has your goal been getting to a C-suite position?

"It always had been, but I have a daughter, and I have another one on the way. Having kids has really made me reevaluate wanting to be present for them, and if you pursue that kind of goal, you have to be dedicated to one or the other. So I don’t know. I’m really curious to see what having number two does for my mindset when it comes to work. Obviously I still love working, but how much will it affect my ambition? I’m in a fairly senior role now, and part of me thinks that I will stay in this role and move a little bit more slowly, so I can maintain some flexibility to be around as my kids grow up, and then when they get older I can rededicate and calibrate towards that. But I’m not sure. I’m just taking it one day at a time... I’m probably going to sacrifice a little bit."

Right. A lot of women have this discussion, partially for their own reasons, but also because sometimes companies might not invest as fully in their employees who are mothers...

"Sure, yeah. You’re absolutely right. For example, a while back when I was engaged, a male colleague asked if I needed to quit my job to focus on planning my wedding.

"When I started my career, all I heard was once you have kids you get behind in the workplace, yada yada yada, which is true. So I took the tactic where I planned to become a senior vice president before I had kids, because if you’re a senior vice president, you’ve earned all your stripes, you make a lot of money, and you have a lot of flexibility with your schedule. So I thought, if I can get there, having kids will be easier because then people can catch up to me, instead of me being left behind.

"My husband and I met in college and married when I was 25. We didn't have kids until our thirties. I was working like a dog in my 20s, but I wanted to get to a certain place where having kids wouldn’t hurt my career. It worked for me, and I know not everyone has that luxury. I made SVP, and I was six months pregnant, so the timing was very, very close. But it’s played out very well.

"Now, I’m rebuilding at a new company, and I’m pregnant. I didn't really intend to get pregnant, but it happened. I’m super-thrilled about it, but I do think it’s a bit more precarious. Even though I have a high title, I'm at a new company and I haven’t quite established myself yet. So I don’t know how harmful [having a kid] will be... I’m working really, really hard until the baby comes, I’ll take maternity leave, and then I’ll come back and get back to work."

Your Money Diary has received overwhelming responses from commenters. Was there one that particularly got you thinking?

"One of the comments on my Money Diaries piece was, 'I wonder if she is happy?' The answer to that is mostly yes. I have a great relationship with my husband, a healthy daughter that I adore, and great family and friends. All that said, I am anxious to be having another kid because I worry if I can still be a good mom, and I worry how it will affect my career. I also worry if there is more to my career than making a lot money for other people and for myself? I hope to find a way to leave a bigger impact on the world and to give back in some way. I am grateful for everything I have and every opportunity I have been afforded, but I feel like I need to do more."

Last December, Kylie Jenner opened up her very-first Kylie Cosmetics pop-up shop in L.A. for the holiday shopping season. About a month later, she expanded her kingdom to New York City. Lines circled the block and winded down mall hallways until every last customer could get their hands on her famous Kylie Lip Kit. Now, with the holidays approaching and a busy shopping season upon us, Jenner devised a new plan for her cosmetics empire: Starting November 20, you can find Kylie Cosmetics at Topshop.

Naturally, there's a catch. First, only seven stores are included. So if you live near New York City, L.A., Atlanta, Houston, Las Vegas, Chicago, or Miami, consider yourself kissed by an angel. Additionally, not all of Kylie's creations will be available. However, you will be able to find at least one product from each category — eyes, lips, and face — and two exclusive Lip Kit collections (eight shades in total), so, we can't totally complain. One more thing: This is an in-store collab only — so you won't be able to score Kylie Cosmetics on Topshop.com. The pop-up collection will stick around until December 25 — five weeks in total — so you can meet all your gifting needs.

For a company that thrives strictly on online sales, you can picture the kind of hysteria that might ensue with the news. Think: Black Friday madness meets OG Lip Kit frenzy. Shoppers, on your marks...

Everyone has that song that makes their blood rush, their face flush, and their pulse quicken. It's the jam you always have queued up when there's even the slightest chance of an overnight guest. It's baby-making, hypnotic hip-swiveling, take-me-now music.

And, there's a lot of it. Sometimes it's the lyrics that get us fired up. Sometimes it's the beat. Sometimes it's just Janet Jackson's voice or the fact that it makes you think of Ryan Gosling. By the second chorus, you're a quivering mess.

From "Drunk in Love" to "Closer," these tunes always seem to do the trick. We'll be adding more songs each week, so keep reading and keep updating that "sexy times" playlist. Don't act like you don't have one.

"Fade Into You," Mazzy Star

The song opens, "I want to hold the hand inside you." To that ridiculously sexy imagery, we say: Okay.

"In Your Eyes," Peter Gabriel

All this talk of "touching the light, the heat in your eyes" is so earnest. Earnestness to this degree can be sexy.

"Tender," Blur

When the singer sings, "Love's the greatest thing that we have / I'm waiting for that feeling," you have a feeling he's talking about a particular kind of loving.

"Peaches and Cream," 112

We all deserve someone who compares cunnilingus to peaches and cream.

"Baby, I Need Your Lovin'" by the Four Tops

Got to have all your loving.

"The Beach," The Neighbourhood

"I feel it burning me / I feel it burning you." This song is certain to make you feel the burn, too.

"Show You the Way," Thundercat feat. Michael McDonald & Kenny Loggins

"Show You the Way" gets its groove from the '70s, making it a very easy song to get down to.

"Hit of You" by Paloma Ford

Meet the perfect bedroom duet.

"Honey" by TRACE

A sparse, bare song that oozes longing in every piano chord.

"Valerie" by Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse

If someone asked us to come over with these trumpets and this enthusiasm, we probably would.

"Hawk Fly Tiger Run" by Ofelia

A breathy voice, a strong bass, and innuendo masked in nature metaphors makes "Hawk Fly Tiger Run" the perfect sexy song for the hipster age.

"Love to Love You," Donna Summer

Slip into this 17-minute disco trance, complete with Donna Summer's moans and sensual whispers.

"Let's Stay Together," Al Green

What's sexier than a declaration of unending love, set to groovy beats?

"That's What I Like," Bruno Mars

Look, it's important to know what you like before embarking upon a relationship. Bruno Mars like silk sheets and sex by the fire.

"I Put a Spell On You," Annie Lennox

This is the best kind of witchcraft.

"I Wanna Be Adored," the Stone Roses

Dragging this amazing British band from the '80s from obscurity is going to take a lot of work. After listening to the epic "I Wanna Be Adored," you'll be part of the cause. Long, complex, and layered with interesting sonic layers, this song is good background music.

"Come and See Me," PARTYNEXTDOOR feat. Drake

We don't mind if we do.

"Take Me to Church," Hozier

With verses infused with longing and regret, "Take Me to Church's" booming choral climaxes are just like — well, you know.

"Kiss it Better" by Rihanna

In which Rihanna wants to stop fighting and start sexual healing.

"Rocket" by Beyoncé

Beyoncé can do sexual innuendo as well as Shakespeare.

"Touch My Body" by Mariah Carey

When Mariah says "touch my body," who wouldn't listen?

"When You're Smiling And Astride Me" by Father John Misty

Romantic as well as wildly sexual, if the title is any indication.

"Earned It" by the Weekend

What did we do to earn this song?

"You Sexy Thing" by Hot Chocolate

Not only the best sexy song, "You Sexy Thing" is simply the best song.

"Between the Sheets" by the Isley Brothers

Let this wildly earnest R&B carry you away to Pleasure Town.

"I Want You (She's So Heavy)" by The Beatles

The song repeats the same line over, and over, and over again — just like your brain does, when you're lusting after someone.

"Ignition (Remix)" by R. Kelly

Does R. Kelly compare his lover to a Lexus coupe? Yes. But is it undeniably catchy? Also yes.

"Kiss" by Prince

Exuberant and bursting with romantic delight.

"Sexx Laws" by Beck

In this funky song, Beck applies his intellectual, semi-nonsensical lyrical approach to sexual conventions. If the chorus is any proof, he sings, "I want to defy the logic of our sex laws / Let the handcuffs slip off your wrist."

"Light My Fire" by the Doors

Sexual innuendo was never so flaming hot. In a deadpan voice, Jim Morrison tries to convince his lover to "set the night on fire" with him. We imagine she didn't need much convincing.

"Lover, You Should Have Come Over" by Jeff Buckley

Buckley's breathy, heartsick voice cracks as he talks about the one who got away. This trembling song about desire starts slow and soft, and then, quite literally, climaxes. It might be too late for Jeff, but it's not for you.

"Sexual Healing," Marvin Gaye

As if this song about the medicinal properties of intercourse needed an introduction.

"Pyramids" by Frank Ocean

At ten minutes long, this epic jam will carry you away on the wings of Frank Ocean's sultry voice and Cleopatra references.

"Coffee" by Miguel

The PG-rated version of this song fills in the word "coffee" for a different word. Watch the video, and it won't be hard to guess what Miguel is really singing about in this song that practically oozes sex appeal.

"Wicked Game," Chris Isaak
This is the sexiest music video of all time, right? Helena Christensen romps on the beach, Chris Isaak gets emo, everybody melts.

"Sex (I'm A...)," Berlin
The new wave group that gave the world "Take My Breath Away" showed off their more X-rated side with this 1983 single. The song's sex-positive lyrics got it banned from many radio stations.

"Set Adrift on Memory Bliss," P.M. Dawn
Getting busy to the Spandau Ballet hit ("True") sampled here seems ridiculous. This 1991 hip-hop update, however, is just so heavenly and sensual that making out seems mandatory. Rest in peace, Prince Be.

"Can't Get You Out Of My Head," Kylie Minogue
While the lyrics could read a little Fatal Attraction -y, the hypnotic beat and Kylie's sultry vocals will probably have you "la la la, la la la la la"-ing all the way to the bedroom.

"Slave to Love," Bryan Ferry
This very well might have been the song your parents were listening to when they conceived you. Try not to let that ruin your listening experience.

"Crimson and Clover," Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
Tommy James and the Shondells' 1968 original has been covered by the likes of Joan Jett and Prince, and one thing remains constant: These lyrics are not about plants.

"No Ordinary Love," Sade
Frankly, every Sade song feels like slipping into a bubble bath with your lover, a bottle of champagne chilling on the side.

"Pony," Ginuwine
Who knew equestrian events could be so thrilling?

"Sex on Fire," Kings of Leon
So long as your mind doesn't wander to possible STD symptoms, this rock anthem is particularly useful for ramping up a middle-of-the-dancefloor smooch sesh.

"Gimme Your Love," Morcheeba
Morcheeba should be on everyone's bedroom playlist.

"Midnight City," M83
This tune has soundtracked so many makeout sessions, it's a wonder there's not an entire generation of babies named M83 as a tribute.

"I'm On Fire," Bruce Springsteen
Bruce Springsteen has a "bad desire." What are you going to do about it?

"I Want Your Sex," George Michael
Subtlety is overrated. Raise your hand if you thought George was singing this to you.

"Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover," Sophie B. Hawkins
All you had to do was ask, Sophie. All you had to do was ask.

"Video Games," Lana Del Rey
The perfect song to switch on when that sexy skateboarder comes over to "Netflix and chill."

"Naughty Girl," Beyoncé
"I'm feelin' sexy..." This song turns even the biggest wallflower into Sasha Fierce when the DJ blasts it at the club.

"Fever," Peggy Lee
Though Peggy Lee is famed for this vampy classic, her version is actually a cover. The song was first recorded by R&B artist Little Willie John in 1956, two years before Lee got her smoky vocals on it.

"Oops (Oh My)," Tweet feat. Missy Elliott
Long before Twitter, Tweet was seducing us with this lyrical striptease. She's totally talking about masturbation, right?

"Paradise Circus," Massive Attack
Hope Sandoval of Mazzy Star contributes the drowsy vocals on this hypnotic track which, yes, also doubles as the theme tune for Luther.

"Any Time, Any Place," Janet Jackson
Which is sexier: the song, or the accompanying video, in which Ms. Jackson and her fine neighbor bone on the regular? Also, do you think he prefers chamomile, or Earl Grey?

"Nightcall," Kavinsky
The Drive soundtrack is basically a sex playlist of its own, but this synth-heavy track is the standout. Crank it up and burn rubber in the bedroom with the Ryan Gosling surrogate of your choice.

"6 Underground," Sneaker Pimps
Raise your hand if you spent the late-'90s making out with your sweetheart after school to this track featured in Can't Hardly Wait and The Saint. Raise your other hand if you thought it was called "Sex Underground."

"Christiansands," Tricky
Damn, that croak is hot. The trip-hop legend's 1996 single seduces with a combination of low warbling and a beat that practically begs you to take your clothes off.

"Untitled (How Does It Feel)," D'Angelo
You knew this was going to be on here, didn't you, you little minx? Hell, you could just play the video with the volume muted and still get turned on.

"Slow," Kylie Minogue
When you name your album Body Language, there had better be some sexy tracks involved. The OG Kylie delivered with this number, which finds her softly cooing the line, "Skip a beat and move with my body, yeah, slow."

"I Feel You," Depeche Mode
This tune's blazing guitar riff never fails, especially if you chase it with its 1993 B-side (Google it, kids), "One Caress." Lead me into your darkness, indeed.

"Need You Tonight," INXS
Pretty much everything Michael Hutchence sang was scorched with his innate sexiness. Between this and "Never Tear Us Apart," you'll never need porn again.

"Doin' It," LL Cool
This is why the ladies love cool James. You can thank Grace Jones (whose single "My Jamaican Guy" is sampled here) and collaborator LeShaun (who used the racy lyrics and sample as far back as the 1980s) for really getting this bedroom anthem underway, however.

"Je T'aime... Moi Non Plus," Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg
Is that really the sound of Jane Birkin having an orgasm? What exactly is Serge saying? And how does this still manage to get us hot despite its recurrence in 3 million films and perfume ads?

"Sexy Boy," Air
Sexy boy, sexy song. Though you may still know this electronic track best for its inclusion in 10 Things I Hate About You(never forget), its pulsating beat and not-sure-what-they're-saying-but-it-sounds-hot French lyrics should give it an R-rating.

"Staring at the Sun," TV on the Radio
How can a song that's not actually about sex be so intoxicatingly erotic? Tunde Adebimpe's voice may have something to do with it.

"Closer," Nine Inch Nails
Trent Reznor announcing that he wants to "fuck you like an animal" may not be subtle, but it's effective. Who hasn't fantasized about doing it against a wall while this rock classic blares?

"Drunk in Love," Beyoncé ft. Jay Z
Pre- Lemonade, the Carters were getting hot and heavy over surfboards and Champagne on ice. Save this one for bae, not some random Bumble conquest.

"Ooh La La," Goldfrapp
Now that's some sexy synth. To be honest, Alison Goldfrapp could read our tax return aloud and we'd be aroused.

"I'm in Love," Kygo and James Vincent McMorrow

The perfect intersection of cheesy romance and sexy beats.

"I Feel it Coming," The Weeknd ft. Daft Punk

You feel what coming?

The Foolproof Cleansing Method That Everyone With Curly Hair Should Try

$

I've been natural for about a year now and I'm still learning about my hair all of the time. It's definitely more effort than I intended, but it's still been a worthwhile journey. One of the first things I learned was how essential moisture is to care for my for curls and kinks. I thought that I was doing my due diligence by spraying a daily leave-in conditioner on my 'fro each morning, then slathering some curl cream on afterwards to seal things in. My hair was definitely moisturized after this process, but it was also greasy and felt kind of dirty. That, coupled with the fact that I only shampoo it every two or three weeks, didn't help matters at all.

Because of my 'fro-stration, I visited stylist Anthony Dickey at his Hair Rules salon in New York City for help. I was over dealing with my head of medium-length, thick hair, and craving a fresh start. The first thing he suggested — a tapered cut — did help, but my new natural routine has helped even more. The Anthony Dickey Method probably isn't new to the seasoned naturals out there, but it was a game-changer for a novice like me. "My approach to hair is based off the specific needs of each texture, whether you're a 4, 3, 2, or 1," he says.

What Is The Anthony Dickey Method?
Dickey's method involves water — and lots of it. In the shower, wet your hair so that it hangs down (this "sets" your hair into its natural pattern, he says). Cleanse with a cream-based shampoo, and then use a lot of conditioner to bring out your curl pattern, working it through from roots to ends to elongate the curl while you detangle. Rinse the conditioner out, but try not alter your pattern too much. Apply styling product to your wet hair and work it through, similar to how you did with the conditioner. Shake and go. Makes sense so far? Watch the video below to see how it's done in the salon.

How Does This Simple Method Work?
According to Dickey, it's simple: Drier textures (your level two, three, and four) need more moisture. It's similar to how we look at skin, he says, the drier you are the more you need hydration — and no better source than H2O in the shower.

The mix of daily (yep, we said daily) water and conditioner helps restore the oils that you need. It's so beneficial that over time, your texture can soften up and the curl can loosen, Dickey says. "When your parched hair gets softer, you have more porosity," he explains.

Of course, you also want to be careful of the conditioners that you choose, too. Even though most brands proclaim that its shampoos and conditioners are sulfate-free, there are still some that lather: something that you do not want. "You don't want to strip it down with shampoos," he adds.

Keep in mind that this is a technique that's meant for curly and kinky textures: threes and fours will get the best results. "If you've got straight hair, there's no benefit for conditioning every day," Dickey says. "Not unless your hair is color-treated or coarser. In that case, the conditioner is better-suited for the ends of hair."

The Controversy Of It All
Anyone with curly or kinky texture knows that this method is a bit controversial — to say the least. So what do other experts say?

"The weight of a conditioner, if applied every day, will weigh your hair down and cause buildup on the hair shaft," hairstylist Cynthia Alvarez, who works with Shakira, Dascha Polanco, and Keke Palmer, says. "This can lead to limp, dull hair and may even cause hair loss by blocking hair follicles if applied directly onto the scalp."

As you can tell, Alvarez doesn't necessarily agree with Dickey's method. "Because curly hair tends to be drier, you do not want to co-wash more than twice a week," she says. What's more, tap water, especially in certain cities, has chlorine, which is very drying and strips the natural oils, Manhattan-based dermatologist Julie Russak, MD once told us.

My Experience
Despite opposing opinions, I decided to give Dickey's method a try. While wash and gos aren't as easy as I intended, I do see the benefits. I don't have to load by hair down with a whole bunch of products when I'm styling it. Raking a liberal amount of his Curly Whip, along with some leave-in conditioner after, does the trick. It's way easier for me to detangle these days, and I rarely have to use a comb. I feel that my curl pattern has loosened up a little, too.

Take a look at the photos above: On the left, pre-cut, I had only co-washed my hair and styled it with a little curling cream the previous day. A long road trip to the beach (and sleeping in the car without my bonnet) dried it out, but that was my hair in its most natural state. I had just visited Dickey when I took the photo on the right. With his magic hands and products, he was able to manipulate my curls and make them pop without a twist-out.

However, I'll be honest, after a month or so I slowed a bit with the method. Three months later, I don't get to co-wash every single day. I was hitting that mark during the first month, but found that it took up way too much time in the mornings — but I did find my sweet spot. These days, I'll rewet my hair in the shower, condition, style, and sit underneath my soft bonnet for about 30 minutes. If my hair's still wet, I'll wrap it in an old t-shirt and sleep that way.

Believe it or not, my life has changed so far: I've got more time in the morning, I don't have to spend hours twisting my hair, and I don't trip when my cheap umbrella flips up on windy and rainy days. For the first time, a little water doesn't leave me running for shelter.

"Introducing the wash and go to women who've been relegated to staying away from water is a learning experience," Dickey says. "Gone is the notion that you can't work out and that you have to run from the rain. Plus, you've seen White and Latina women with wet, curly hair all your life. None of them have bronchitis or pneumonia. Their lives aren't busier than women of color." Amen to that.

The Steamiest, Sexiest Movies Of All Time

$

0

The sexiest movies aren't necessarily lurking in the adults-only section of HBO — or in the deleted archives of one's browser history. Often, the steamiest films are mainstream. Whether a flick actually features a crazy-hot love scene or a more innocent tryst between a forbidden couple, it's perfectly acceptable to find these movies tantalizing. Let's be real: That was totally the filmmaker's point.

As a celebration of the sexiest films to ever grace the big screen, we've rounded up a collection of movies that have a history of encouraging sexy thoughts. While turn-ons are as varied as people are, these movies certainly attempt to evoke certain feelings in all of us.

Is it hot in here? Nope, it's just these movies. Click through to read about the sexiest movies to inspire endless fantasizing.

The Reader(2008)

This is mostly a dark movie, with a dash of sexiness. When he's a teenager, Michael Berg (David Kross) has an affair with an older woman, Hanna (Kate Winslet). Then, she disappears. Michael finds out why, years later, when he sees Hannah being tried for her Nazi war crimes.

In the Realm of the Senses(1976)

The only adjective you really need to describe this movie is sexy. Super, super sexy. The beautiful, artistic movie takes place in 1930s Japan, and is about a passionate and destructive affair between Sada Abe (Eiko Matsuda) and her employer, Kichizo Ishida (Tatsuya Fuji). It features unstimulated (aka real) sex.

Desert Hearts(1986)

In the year 1935, Vivian Bell (Helen Shaver) drives to Reno, Nevada so she can expedite her divorce process. While lounging around for the six-week period required for residency, Vivian strikes up a friendship with Cay Rivvers (Patricia Charbonneau), which, to Vivian's surprise becomes something more than friendship.

Young & Beautiful(2013)

Losing her virginity unlocks something inside of Isabelle (Marine Vacth). She begins to quite willingly work as a prostitute. "It was like a game," she says. It's a game until one of her clients passes away, and her parents find out about her double life led in the name of sexual awakening.

Nymphomaniac Vol. 1 & Vol. 2

You read that right: Volumes one and two. It takes self-proclaimed nymphomaniac Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg) two full length movies in order to fully retell a lifetime's worth of sexual exploits to a stranger who finds her beaten-up in an alley, and brings her home for recuperation.

Zentropa Entertainments/Kobal/REX/Shutterstock

A Royal Affair(2012)

In 18th century Denmark, Caroline Matilda of Great Britain (Alicia Vikander) is forced to marry the mentally ill King Christian VII of Denmark (Mikkel Folsgaard), because back then, women were convenient alliance-forming pawns. A doctor, Johann Friedrich Strunsee (Mads Mikkelsen), is brought on to care for the king. Finally meeting someone she likes in that castle, Caroline and the liberal-minded Johann start a passionate affair

Moviestore Collection/REX/Shutterstock

Cheri(2009)

In Paris at the turn of century, a retired courtesan (Kathy Bates) enlists the help of her old colleague, Lea (Michelle Pfeiffer), with a parenting problem. Charlotte's son, Cheri (Rupert Friend), is a difficult, stubborn, thorn in her side — and a virgin. Lea's brought on to teach Cheri the ways of the world. Charlotte never intended on Lea and Cheri's relationship blossoming into something like love, yet that's what happens, despite their 20-year age gap.

Poison Ivy(1992)

Drew Barrymore plays a seductress named Ivy, and Ivy becomes poison for the Cooper family. Seeking a stable home life, Ivy very creepily ingratiates herself into the Cooper family by seducing the father. Then, she attempts to off the mother, and frame the daughter. It's sexy in an erotic thriller sort of way.

SNAP/REX/Shutterstock

From Dusk Till Dawn(1996)

We'll sell you on the sex appeal of this vampire film quickly. Salma Hayek plays a vampire goddess named Santanico Pandemonium who specializes in a "snake dance," and is but one vampire working in a bar straight out of True Blood.

Joyce Podell/Los Hooligans/A Band Apart/Kobal/REX/Shutterstock

Dangerous Liasions(1988)

Two bored French aristocrats decide to cause trouble by playing games of manipulation and seduction. If you like Cruel Intentions, watch this movie — they're based off the same novel.

Snap Stills/REX/Shutterstock

In the Mood For Love(2000)

Two neighbors in Hong Kong find that their lonely lives adhere to a similar schedule. They spark up an intimate friendship, especially after confessing that their spouses are both having an affair. While they feel lust for each other, they want to be better than their cheating spouses. So, In the Mood For Love is steeped in unfulfilled and aching sexual tension, which is undeniably its own brand of sexiness.

Dirty Dancing(1987)

Rarely are summer flings are productive as the one between Baby (Jennifer Grey) and Johnny (Patrick Swayze). In addition to giving Baby the strength to rise above her judgmental family, she learns to dirty dance. The tangible chemistry between Grey and Swayze spread sex appeal all over the dance floor.

Titanic(1997)

In actuality, the iconic love story between Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet) is chaste, compared to some of the other selections on this list. But the palpable sexual tension, combined with one steamy handprint on a car, makes Titanic one of the sexiest (and saddest) movies ever.

20th Century Fox/Paramount/Kobal/REX/Shutterstock

Kiss Me(2011)

Frida goes to her father's wedding with her fiancé, and finds herself thrown for a loop. She's inexplicably, totally, and completely attracted to her soon-to-be stepmother's daughter, Mia. Kiss Me should be a fixture in the forbidden love genre.

The Lover(1992)

In this film based on the famous novel by Margeurite Duras, a French teenager and a wealthy older Chinese man in 1920s French Indochina carry out an affair in seedy corners of Saigon. The jig's almost up on their forbidden relationship. But when will it end, and how?

Renn/Burrill/Films A2/Kobal/REX/Shutterstock

My Golden Days(2015)

Of course a film about a middle-aged French anthropologist remembering his first love is going to be steamy. The lush, romantic film is actually a prequel to the 1996 three-hour epic, My Sex Life or...How I Got Into An Argument," which is all about the French academic's present-day life. My Golden Days explains how he became such a romantic idealist.

Adore(2013)

Robyn Wright and Naomi Watts' characters grow up in idyll on the Australian coast. When they grow up, they raise their beautiful sons in adjacent beautiful homes. Everything is beautiful and nothing hurts.

And then, the women start sleeping with each others' sons. Still beautiful? Up to you to decide.

Troy(2014)

Only Hollywood could take The Iliad, strip it of its poetry and literary significance, and make it an excuse for Orlando Bloom, Eric Bana, and Brad Pitt to prance around on horseback.

My Beautiful Laundrette(1985)

In a rough neighborhood of London, Omar Ali (Gordon Warnecke) inherits a laundromat from his uncle. Then, Omar is beat up by a gang of racist kids — the leader of whom is, surprisingly, Omar's ex-lover, Johnny (Daniel Day-Lewis). Despite Johnny's connection to the group, he and Omar rekindle their relationship. This acclaimed, heartening movie about love against the odds features what may be the best ear lick of all time.

Body Heat(1981)

Set in Florida during an intense heatwave, this is a movie about passion, heat, crime, and a lot of sweat. Ned Racine (William Hurt), a shy lawyer, starts a passionate affair Matty Walker (Kathleen Turner), the wife of a big shot businessman. Ned teams up with one of his criminal clients to kill Matty's husband, so the two can run off together. Of course, Ned finds himself way over his head. Not even the hottest sex can save him now.

Boogie Nights (1997)

What else do you expect from a movie about Mark Wahlberg trying to break into the adult film industry?

Out of Sight(1998)

What happens when you pit George Clooney's notorious bank robber against J-Lo's Federal Marshal on the hunt? Chemistry, of course. In addition to being steamy, this witty movie received almost universal acclaim from critics.

Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love(1996)

You'd expect that a movie with the title "Kama Sutra" would be sexy, and trust us — it delivers. Set in 16 century India, Kama Sutra is about two childhood friends who become sexual rivals in their womanhood. Tara becomes engaged to the king, and her best friend Maya is groomed into becoming his mistress. This cannot end well, though at least there are drawn-out sex scenes along the way.

Carol(2015)

This gorgeous period piece tells the story of a timid shopgirl who becomes romantically involved with a wealthy housewife. The movie's sexiest moment comes when a couple takes a road trip away from Carol's husband and steam up a motel room. What makes Carol a great film, however, are the satisfying journeys of self-discovery that both women embark on.

Original Sin
Sure, the movie was slammed by critics. But upturned noses can't take away from the crazy chemistry between leads Angelina Jolie and Antonio Banderas in this period piece set in Cuba during 19th century Spanish rule.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008)
The artist-and-his-muse archetype gets revamped in this Woody Allen flick. The Spanish setting is romantic enough, but all bets (and clothing items) are off when you add in the allure of the painter, his colorful past lover, and the promise of a new one.

Are You Obsessed With Justin & Selena's Reunion? Yea, We Are Too — Here's Why

$
0
0

I am 30 years old, and I like to think I'm pretty mature. I pay my bills on time, I've recently become a skilled meal prepper, and I'm a couple of decades removed from my days of scrapbooking photos of the Backstreet Boys. I am full-on, smack dab in the middle of responsible adulthood. And yet, for the past week, I've been reading, Googling, and Instagramming, searching for any possible piece of evidence that Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez have officially gotten back together.

And though one might think that I should be ashamed or embarrassed by this fact, I am not. Sure, I'm at an age where I should be well beyond obsessing over a barely-grown-up celebrity couple. But here I am, and I am not alone. This potential Bieber and Selena reunion has dominated not just the headlines, but my work small talk, Twitter feed, and my group chat with my fellow pop-culture loving sister Amaiya and BFF Joseph. "He's turning a new leaf and she had a scary life altering moment — they had to find their way back to each other!" Amaiya wrote as we swapped photos of the smile-y coupl e bike riding together. "Ugh, I was rooting for her," said Joseph. "It feels too soon! I don't want her to waste her new kidney on him!" Several of my co-workers have also admitted that even though they aren't even fans of either pop star or their music, they haven't been able to resist speculating over every detail either.

When it comes to the never-ending saga of Jelena, it seems, we're all in this together. Even Bieber told Access Hollywood in 2015 "I'm never going to stop loving her. I'm never going to stop checking in on her. I don’t think if you end a relationship, you should end that, unless it was super toxic." These 20-somethings have evolved into the Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton of our day, a glamorous couple whose grand romantic gestures (Bieber gave Burton some competition when he rented out the Staples Center so he and Gomez could watch Titanic in 2011) and dramatic breakups-to-makeups live under a microscope. Except, one might argue, this duo might even be even more larger than life than Liz and Dick, thanks to a never-ending news cycle and the black hole that is social media. But how is it that otherwise sane, well-adjusted adults melt into squealing fanatics whenever a new photo of Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez bike riding, or leaving hockey practice, or driving in a car pops up on the Internet? It turns out there are a few reasons we're all so invested in this teenage-turned-adult love affair.

After I couldn't stop sharing with friends my theory that the pair are eerily similar to Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton (sorry for the rambling, friends), I decided to turn to Nancy Schoenberger, the author of Furious Love: Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and The Marriage Of The Century to back me up. Schoenberger agrees there are many similarities between the two couples, and says the reason we've been enraptured by both is because of one word: Fantasy.

"Taylor was also a child star who was practically born famous, and as a couple she and Burton were also extraordinarily alluring," she says. "Celebrities are the closest things we have to the Greek gods. They're larger than life, often beautiful beyond the physical blessings most of us make do with, and rewarded with money, fame, opportunity — the stuff of dreams. Just as the Greeks enjoyed tales of romantic entanglements with the gods, we voyeuristically enjoy being titillated by romantic couplings like these. They fuel our fantasies."

"You can't write a movie better than the love story of Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber."

When those photos were first released and sent the internet into a tailspin, I couldn't help but think about my old stomping grounds Us Weekly, which was the first outlet to confirm the couple had officially gotten back together (via an anonymous source). From my experience there as an editor, I knew that news room must've been buzzing non-stop with reporters on the case, so I reached out to my old coworker, Deputy News Director Brody Brown. He confirms that everyone at Us Weekly was shocked — "aghast!" — and says he thinks our obsession with the pair's on-again, off-again situation is simply because we find them relatable.

"I think their drama fascinates us because we all love to see celebrities in situations that we've actually been through," Brown says. "Haven't we all been there where we have a friend that constantly goes back and forth with an ex? Eventually we get to the point where throw up our hands, because we realize it doesn't matter what we say or what advice we give, because our friend is going to do what they want anyway. That's Bieber and Selena. But as Selena herself has said, 'The heart wants what it wants!'"

Cooper Lawrence, author of Cult of Celebrity: What Our Fascination With the Stars Reveals About Us and host of The Cooper Lawrence Show, adds that Gomez and Bieber are like a movie we've all been watching for years — one that we can project our own lives onto.

"She's the pure-as-snow heroine and he's the talented pop star, they're a perfect couple, we see them traveling together and looking beautiful on red carpets, so we say Wow, I want a relationship just like that! " Lawrence says. "Then they break up, and we watch all the conflict, and we think Well, at least my romantic life is going better than Bieber and Selena's! And then there's Bieber's egg-throwing and his DUI, then Gomez moves on to another heartthrob, and then reveals she had a kidney transplant! Right when Bieber has found religion! I mean, you can't write a movie better than the love story of Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber."

Photo: Kevin Mazur/Getty Images.

Liz and Dick and Jelena aren't the only celebrity couples that have caught the public's attention, of course. Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, and Rihanna and Chris Brown — they've all sparked endless speculation over the years. Even Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick remain in the headlines thanks to their rollercoaster romance. Lisa France, a senior writer for CNN Digital, says there's a common thread in these couples that keeps us tantalized: The good girl-bad boy dynamic.

"As a society, we've been dazzled by this kind of dangerous love story since Romeo and Juliet," France says. "These two are like a coming of age story mixed with adult romance, and that all feels heightened because we have the classic, innocent starlet who just can't stay away from the bad boy with a good heart. There's two sides to the coin, because we're all rooting for Bieber to be better, but we also feel like Selena Gomez was one of the best parts about him in many ways."

I also have to think that perhaps there's a reason why none of us can resist this story right now. In a world where our televisions and newsfeeds are flooded with stories about terrorism, racism, sexual assault, and political shadiness, I find comfort in spending my lunch break zooming in on Jelena paparazzi shots or engaging in intense group chat discussions with my best friends about whether this couple is meant to be.

And ah, there it is. The final reason we're all so engrossed in the Jelena love affair is we're searching for the answer to one question: Are Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez star-crossed lovers with no shot of lasting forever, or are they truly destined to be together?

"If this was a movie, the fairy tale ending would be that these two get engaged by Christmas and live happily ever after," Lawrence says. "But we have to remember they are very young. I have a feeling there's still a lot more to Selena and Justin's story."

Call me a hopeless romantic (or just a Belieber in Jelena...too far?) but I'll be here with my fingers crossed that this love story will turn out better than Liz and Dick's. Either way, I'll have my outfit ready for a wedding viewing party.

Here's How Much It Would Cost To Buy All Of Oprah's Favorite Things

$
0
0

If there's anybody whose taste we consistently trust — whether it comes to books, movies, gadgets, or fashion — it's the one and only Oprah. That's why when she releases her list of favorite things every year, our ears perk up. Sure, it's lovingly eccentric (this time around, we're talking mermaid blankets and rather overpriced bicycles), but it also immediately gets us into the holiday spirit.

Last year, the price of the complete list totaled about $14,000. The year before that, 87 items came out to an extravagant $15,565.05. In 2017, her list seems to have gotten a bit more democratic: The 102 items cost $13,400 total ($12,200 if you use Oprah's special discount). On it, there are gadgets, cases for gadgets, fancy hand creams, and so many snuggly, fuzzy things that we almost can't wait for it to finally get colder.

Oprah's favorite things for 2017, once again, delights with personality. And fuzzy things. But while Oprah may have impeccable taste, we know how to edit and cull her lengthy list to just the necessities we know you'll need. Check out some of our favorites from it, ahead.

Oprah says: "These adorable Bluetooth speakers made last year's list, and now some new critters are joining the menagerie. Pick one or pair up a cute couple, and watch kids of all ages grin from ear to ear."

Our take: Cute. Tiny. Thing. Must. Buy.

My Audio Pet OWLcapella Blue, $29.99 (20% off with code OPRAH), available at My Audio Pet.

Oprah says: "People spend the best years of their lives either trying to untangle their charger cords or track down missing earbuds. Here's a well-priced way to give the gift of sanity (and organization)."

Our take: We'll do just about anything to keep our cords from tangling, so yep.

My Tagalongs Charger Cases, $16 each (20% off with code OPRAH), available at My Tagalongs.

Oprah says: "As they sang in South Pacific, 'If you don't have a dream, how you gonna have a dream come true?' These cotton duvet covers encourage little ones to dream big."

Our take: Obviously little girls have more options than just being princesses or mermaids these days. With these chic blankets, kids (or adults) can pretend they're dinosaurs, astronauts... or mermaids, or princesses, if they like.

Snurk Duvet Covers, $119 each, available at snurkliving.com.

Oprah says: "My stepmother had furry, pink slippers in 1968, and in 2017, chic women everywhere are wearing them out to lunch. Give a pair to a stylish friend and make her day."

Our take: We very much approve of wearing these out to lunch. Or dinner, or drinks...

Emu Australia Mayberry Sheepskin Slides, $59.95, available at Emu Australia.

Oprah says: "Taking baths is my hobby, which means I'm never without my white tea and honeysuckle Lollia by Margot Elena bubbles. The bottle is almost as lovely as the relaxation inside."

Our take: That has got to be the most "Oprah" thing ever said. Also, nice to see we have hobbies in common.

Lollia by Margot Elena Dream Bubble Bath, $50 (20% off with code OPRAH), available at LolliaLife.com.

Oprah says: "This bike is a monochromatic masterpiece, a work of art that truly moves you — its two gears shift automatically. It's light and made to last, with a basket built into the frame. You can choose from eight shades, but I can't wait to ride my brand-new white one around Santa Barbara."

Our take: At this price, you better make use of it. (P.S. What we would do to encounter Oprah on her bike.)

Martone Cycling Co. Gramercy Diamond, $1,100, available at Martone Cycling Co.

Oprah says: "Spoiler alert, Beyoncé: Your present's been selected. These seven hot sauces range from mild to uh-oh, so naturally they're designed to look like sticks of dynamite."

Black Tights That Don't Rip: Do They Exist?

Update: Black tights: Can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em. Since winter is here (even though we don't want to face it), we tested out five pairs (of varying prices, textures, and fits) to know exactly which ones you should be adding to your wardrobe this season. Consider this your cheat sheet to keep your legs warm the next few months.

This story was originally published on October 29, 2014.

It doesn't matter if you only wear black tights when you really need to or if you've advanced to Zooey Deschanel-levels of doesn't-matter-if-it's-July-give-me-my-tights levels of obsession: No one likes a flimsy pair of hose. And, if you're a woman who falls on the clumsier end of the spectrum, holding onto a pair of tights for an entire season feels like a feat that deserves a merit badge.

We've adopted habits to get around accidental snags (raise your hand if you only file your nails after cutting them during black tights season). We've avoided buying certain clothes and shoes, and even choose to avoid suspect seats out of a fear of snags. Add to that our insistence on only wearing truly opaque tights that 1. don't give us crotch sag, and 2. can actually make it through a spin cycle without unraveling, and you're dealing with a set of variables that can make one seriously consider the Taylor Momsen school of style.

The hosiery market isn't a small one, and there are literally thousands of weaves, blends, elasticities, and fibers to confound you. But, among them all are a handful of cult faves to which tights-wearers have sworn allegiance (and if you know a tights-wearer, you know that she's fanatical). We stretched these tights to the limit, committed ourselves to abusing our legs, and provided our honest-to-Lycra reviews.

Ahead, the no-bull truth about tights that'll never fail you.

Uniqlo

The Pair: Women Heattech Tights
The Price: $10
The Durability: These felt much sturdier than drugstore tights, but there was enough inelasticity in the material that I immediately felt like I needed to be careful with these (and after catching a knee on a coffee table edge and starting a tiny rip, it was evident that being careful is necessary). If you're a tights-abuser, the weave on these will snag easily enough, and you'll end up with long, thick runs that'll render them useless. However, the real pro to these are Heattech technology. It wasn't cold enough when I was testing these out to really see it work its magic, but I have friends who swear that Uniqlo Heattech tights are warmer than jeans during NYC winters.
The Opacity: These are very black and very, very matte, but if there's any sign of stretch (especially at the knees), you'll come across some sheerness issues.
The Sag-Factor: Uniqlo tights only come in two sizes (S/M and L/XL), which is unfortunate, because both run short. Luckily, if you're on the shorter end, the control top keeps them hiked up and in place all day. But, for any longer-legged sisters, you'll definitely have drop-crotch issues.
The Verdict: If fit and longevity is a big concern, you might want to skip Uniqlo.

Spanx

The Pair: Blackout Tights
The Price: $38
The Durability: Full confession: These were my go-to brand of tights before this experiment. As a cheapie-pair-only wearer for years and years, I was forced into buying a pair on a very cold November day since the shop didn't sell anything else. That years ago. I still own these tights. I have gone hiking in them, assembled furniture in them, and bruised myself against pointed corners in them. They developed two small rips in the left toe and upper thigh during Year Three, but because of the weave, they haven't gotten any bigger than a quarter inch.
The Opacity: They're a true, deep black — completely opaque — but have a slight sheen to them that gets shinier with wear.
The Sag-Factor: They're vise-like, to a fault. For the first two months of wearing them in, your hips might be sore at the end of the day. For that reason, don't buy the extra-high waist one unless you have masochistic tendencies (or don't need your diaphragm to breathe). However, after dozens of washings, they're still very elastic and never budge.
The Verdict: No pain, no gain, right? I'm constantly amazed at how durable these tights are, but the break-in period can be brutal. I now own two pairs of these, and I made sure to size up two sizes…but still. Ow. Out of all the tights I tried, these are (probably) the only ones that allow you to jump into a swimming pool filled with steel wool and emerge sans snag.

DKNY

The Pair: Super Opaque Control Top Tight
The Price: $16
The Durability: Soft, but still snug (you definitely get the feeling that you're in a pair of tights with these), the DKNY felt like a hardy pair that don't immediately snag. However, after a week's wear with ankle boots, I did develop slight pilling around the ankles. Also — and I take full responsibility for this because it says on the package that they're hand wash-only — I machine-washed and -dried these tights. When brusquely pulling them on in a sleepy haze the next morning, my fingers ripped clear through the left side. Oops.
The Opacity: Slightly sheer. There's no sheen to these, but they weren't as aggressively opaque as I like.
The Sag-Factor: No sagging! If anything, there was a bit of extra length in these (for reference, I'm 5'3" and typically wear a size 25 pant). The feet are slightly squarer than most, and might leave you with paddles for toes, which means you can't wear them with open-toed shoes.
The Verdict: These aren't a bad choice of tights for women who are a little more delicate with their clothes and don't maul their stockings when they put them on. And, for $16, you're getting a ton of quality for the price. These tights also come in a huge range of sizes, unlike most brands out there.

Uniqlo, $9.9, available at UniqloIllustrated by Anna Sudit.

Commando

The Pair: Opaque Control Tights
The Price: $402
The Durability: It rained hard the first day I wore these tights and since I somehow managed to leave all my rain boots at the office, I had to wear an old pair of waterproof boots with a ragged edge that has a reputation for completely destroying cheap tights. After a day of abuse, I stripped off the wet tights, quickly washed them, and hung them up to dry. In the morning, they were like new. Seriously!
The Opacity: Despite what the name might say, they are not "perfectly opaque," though they are perfectly matte. The weave of these tights is also of high quality, and so fine and silky (without been shiny) that I could nearly overlook the slight sheerness.
The Sag-Factor: Commando's whole thing is that their products feel invisible. And, these tights were, out of the bunch, the softest, gentlest tights I tried. However, that also meant that they weren't very good at controlling my top and started sagging by mid-day of the first wear. Throughout the day, I ended up with a one-inch gap, which — while not terrible — was pretty annoying.
The Verdict: For ladies who hate the feeling of wearing pants, you'll probably appreciate Commando's tights for how soft and non-pinchy they are (a couple hours in, I forgot that I was even wearing tights…and that's while they were still wet from the rain). If you've got longer legs, you might have issues with sagging, but size up if you suspect that's the case.

Wolford

The Pair: Mat Opaque 80
The Price: $61. The Rolls Royce of the bunch.
The Durability: For how soft these are (and they are definitely luxuriously soft), these were also surprisingly resilient. TMI alert: I put these on after clipping my finger and toenails, which would have normally decimated a cheap pair of tights, but there was nary a fray. After running them through a washing machine spin cycle, they emerged exactly like new.
The Opacity: Here's the thing. These are opaque, and don't have even a hint of shine. However, the Mat Opaques are not perfectly black (in certain light, they look navy or brown). This can drive some people crazy, and yet be totally cool for others. Different strokes.
The Sag-Factor: As someone used to The Squeeze (see: review for Spanx), I was completely perplexed when I put these Wolford tights on for the first time. They were so stretchy, so lightweight, and so soft that they barely felt like I was wearing tights as all. However, by the end of the day, they were beginning to show signs of crotch sagging. By the end of the week, I was tugging at the hemline every time I stood up because they kept sliding southward.
The Verdict: For those that prefer a more luxurious-feeling tight that won't fritz out on you, these are your pair. They'll last you years, but if you're on the taller end or have a narrow waist, be forewarned that you might have crotch-fit issues. For $55, these are definitely expensive. But, I know women who've had their Wolfords for half a decade — think about all the cheap $5 hose you've destroyed in that long a time.

Redheads Are Finally Getting The Emoji They Deserve

$

It wasn't that long ago that the Unicode Consortium, the brain behind our beloved emojis, created an option for different skin tones. While addressing one major issue of representation, it appears that it missed another: Where are all the redheads?

Go ahead and check your phone. Even with the latest iOS 11.1 update, you'll notice a handful of blondes, several brunettes, and even an emoji with the default yellow hair. After what feels like thousands of phone updates — and emojis no one asked for — users are perplexed that somehow red hair is still not a foreseeable option. Naturally, they took their complaints to Twitter.

Well, it looks like the Unicode Consortium heard our rallying tweets: A red hair emoji is coming soon, along with a handful of other emojis — including a superhero, a swan, and a microbe — so the future of the language is looking bright. But before we get too ahead of ourselves, let's be clear: The list of emoji candidates means that the illustrations could still be amended or swapped.

Of course, as the news began to trickle down, redheads everywhere were ecstatic and ready to celebrate. "Redheads our time has come at last," one wrote.

But this isn't the only good news. It appears that the Unicode is finally recognizing that there are a lot of hair types not represented, and it looks like it might add curly hair to the keyboard as well. Not only that, but you might also be seeing some bald emojis in your group chat very soon, too. Lift your praise hands (or high-five, depending on how you look at it) emojis to that.

As much as we all love complaining about how busy we are — real talk, everyone gets a little bit of smug pleasure from declaring themselves “totally swamped” — burnout is very real and can strike even the most energetic and highly functioning among us. It happens when the exhilaration of tearing through a packed day shades into stress and causes us to start getting frustrated and slipping up. Ever worked yourself into a tizzy because your perfectly planned schedule went awry by 15 minutes? That’s classic burnout.

Now, we’ll just say right up front that we’re not going to try to convince you to slow down or give up on your ambitious on-the-go lifestyle. You do you. Instead, we want to let you in on some real-time tips and tricks that’ll shave off unnecessary time-sucks and stressors from your day. Whether it be banning that “Did I turn off my straightener?” anxiety or relying on your Google Assistant to get things done, these tricks all come by way of the most efficient, constantly on-the-move people we know. Read on (hands-free and between today’s many engagements, we’re imagining), and prepare to do what you do even better.

Set yourself up for success by starting every morning with a digestible game plan of your duties and appointments. Before getting ready, ask your Google Assistant for a manageable briefing.

We all know that feeling of dread that hits when you’re halfway to work and suddenly can’t remember if you turned off the oven. Combat these busy-girl qualms by creating a “last-minute list” of all the things you need to check before running out the door. Also, it might feel silly, but getting into the habit of saying “I’m turning off my curling iron/tea kettle/AC/lights” aloud to yourself can really help.

Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Didn't have a chance to brew your morning roast before dashing out the door? Avoid going out of the way by asking your Google Assistant to find you a caffeine fix on your direct route.

No time to press your wrinkled #OOTD? Throw your top and a slightly damp kitchen towel in the dryer for five minutes for the same effect as a steamer. In a pinch, you can also use your hair straightener on low heat to iron out collars and creases.

Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Invest in a “must-have pouch” that’s big enough to fit your cellphone, wallet, keys, and daily essentials but small enough to pop in any of your purses. This is a must for people with a habit of changing up their bags to match their outfits.

Perpetually stressed about showing up late? Commit to a one-week challenge in which you build a 15-minute buffer into all of your travel time. Your nerves will thank you.

Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Get into the habit of recording your exact location whenever you park. Ask your Google Assistant to remember your parking space and repeat it back to you when it’s time to leave.

Take 10 minutes right now and clean out your car, desk, or home office. In a study conducted by Brother, 52% of participants claimed they felt instantly more productive with a tidy work area.

Need to get on the phone with your bank, airline, or pharmacy but don’t have the time to sit on hold? Use a virtual queue and let the site wait for you. Hold music is about to be a thing of the past.

Busy people tend to fall victim to the trap of trying to multitask, only to end up getting partway into each project and not finishing any. Install a website blocker to temporarily cut off outside distractions — like social media — until you’ve completed the task at hand.

Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

At the same time, be mindful of times when your brain is begging for a break or distraction from your work. Ask your Google Assistant to remind you to build reboots into your day. Even the busiest schedules need breathing room.

Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Dashing around at 10% battery? Pop your phone on airplane mode to charge up even faster.

On the go and in need of a quick caffeine boost or pick-me-up snack? Download the apps for the coffee shops and restaurants you frequent most to place your orders in advance and avoid lengthy lines. Not to mention, the more you order, the more most spots will reward you — discounts, free meals, you name it.

Our busiest days typically involve traveling. Have your Google Assistant keep tabs on any changes in your transportation information. It’s like having a personal travel agent in your pocket.

Behold: All The Ways The GOP Wants to Screw Women Over With The New Tax Bill

$
0
0

This week, House Republicans finally released their long-awaited tax reform bill. In a move that should shock no one, they’re, touting it as a huge success for tax cuts. Critics, also unsurprisingly, are pointing out that it seems to largely benefit wealthy Americans and larger corporations, leaving low- and middle-income Americans, Americans with disabilities, and Americans with dependents in the dust.

But one other element of the package that’s worth talking about is the impact the proposed policies would have on women. And, whether it’s the tax implications for childcare and student loans or for costly medical bills and adoption-related expenses, the bottom line is not good.

So how — and how badly — are Republicans specifically screwing over women? Let’s look at some of the most prominent examples from this bill:

Proposed Change: Repeal the employer-provided childcare credit.
What It Does: Ivanka Trump has been sashaying around the Capitol trying to increase the child tax credit. The bill includes an uptick but doesn’t expand the amount as much as the eldest Trump daughter hoped for. Current law stipulates that individuals with children under the age of 17 can receive a $1,000 tax credit per child. The new law increases that amount to $1,600 per child (not the $2,000-plus Ivanka Trump campaigned for) and adds in a $300 tax credit for non-child dependents. However, there seems to be a trade-off: The bill also gets rid of the employer-provided child care credit, which incentivizes businesses to help provide childcare in exchange for tax credits.
Who It Screws Over: Low-income women and working women
How It Screws Them Over: Finding suitable childcare is a huge burden on parents across the nation. Given the fact that women are often the ones who take off work or quit their jobs to take care of their kids, a law that would give employers less reason to help with childcare can put more of the onus on parents to find other (typically pricier) alternatives.

Proposed Change: Reform the student loan interest deduction and create a private college endowment tax.
What It Does: Under current law, people with student loans can file for an interest deduction that allows them to deduct up to $2,500 in interest paid towards certain students loans. Under the GOP bill, that deduction would only apply in cases of death or “total and permanent disability.” Given that over 44 million Americans are paying off student debt and three out of 10 of those people file this deduction, it’s a huge loss. And while the private college endowment tax might seem to affect universities themselves more than students, it’s a trickle-down issue: Money from endowments is used to fund financial aid and other student-centric costs, pay for faculty, staff, and research, and build and maintain college properties. If there’s a tax, that could shift financial priorities.
Who It Screws Over: Younger women, low-income women, and women with disabilities
How It Screws Them Over: While student debt often plagues people decades after school, young people just out of school with less income as well as low-income women are most affected by this provision. Additionally, there isn’t word on what “total and permanent disability” means, so for women who don’t qualify for that but still may not be able to work in a full-time, part-time, or any capacity to pay off loans, the reform could be devastating.

Proposed change: Add a stipulation that gives an “unborn child” the ability to be a “designated beneficiary” for a college savings account.
What It Does: The stipulation allows parents who are expecting a child to put away money in a tax-advantaged college savings plan called a 529, where the money isn’t federally taxed and may be exempt from state taxes as well.
Who It Screws Over: Pro-choice women and allies.
How It Screws Them Over: This credit doesn’t directly screw over women through taxes the same way other changes do, but pro-choice supporters point out that it takes the debate over when life “begins” into the tax realm and could have big legal implications in the future.

Proposed change: Repeal a medical expenses deduction and slash a rare disease incentive for businesses.
What It Does: Repeal a provision that would allow seniors and/or people with large medical expenses to write off those expenses if the individual spends more than 10% of their total income on out-of-pocket medical bills. It also reduces a tax incentive for pharmaceutical companies to find treatments for rarer diseases by 50%.
Who It Screws Over: Women with disabilities and elderly women
How It Screws Them Over: Anyone who requires long-term or expensive care would be on the hook for those bills, and the bill would disproportionately affect low- and middle-income households. One example is the survivors of the Las Vegas shooting, many of whom have astronomical medical costs and would receive no deductions if this bill were to go through.

Proposed change: Eliminate the adoption tax credit.
What It Does: Currently, individuals can receive a $13,570 tax credit for adopting a child through international, private, or foster care adoptions, and unused amounts of the credit can be carried over for five years. If the child doesn’t have special needs, the credit can only be used to cover adoption expenses. The tax credit is phased out for people with an income between $203,540 and $243,540. This entire system is gone if the Republican tax bill becomes law, even for families adopting children with special needs.
Who It Screws Over: Women with adopted children and children awaiting adoption
How It Screws Them Over: Not everyone who adopts comes from wealthy backgrounds, and by making it more expensive for families, experts worry that fewer people will go through the adoption process due to the sheer cost. There are other financial constraints for families looking to adopt children with special needs who’ll require more attention. Additionally, considering that the Republican Party constantly says that pregnant women who can’t afford to take care of a child should “just put it up for adoption” instead of getting an abortion, they’re making it financially harder for people to actually adopt those children.

Obviously, House Republicans still have to make changes to the bill and vote on it, and Republicans in the Senate have to officially present their own version of the bill. But if it wasn’t clear before, it is now: Republicans are taking a swing at more than just tax brackets here.

They’re turning tax reform into a referendum on women’s reproductive rights, their ability to work outside the home, and their healthcare rights. Can I get a big HELL NO?
